Classification Society ABS grants Approval in Principle to Hyundai Heavy Industries for its Floating Production Storage and Offloading hull design.

ABS and Hyundai Heavy Industries worked together developing a technically feasible and class compliant FPSO hull design, maintaining high safety standards and using the latest technologies.

According to ABS, the AIP demonstrates that the design substantially complies with Class and Regulatory requirements.

Basically, the design basis is storing 2 mbbl of crude oil in the hull, applying shipbuilding standards, and combining some key features such as a 25-year lifetime without drydocking, and structural reinforcement for topside structure installation.

The HHI Senior Vice President of the Shipbuilding Division, Jae-Eul Kim, said: “The newbuilding conversion FPSO hull design can be built for about half the cost as compared to a conventional FPSO hull”
